The Call of the Volcano

I arrived in Pucón towards the end of the Chilean summer, eager to conquer the summit of Volcán Villarica. Richard Diaz, the owner and main guide of Terra Volcano, greeted me with a warmth and enthusiasm that immediately put me at ease. With over a decade of guiding experience, Richard’s love for the mountains was infectious. He welcomed me into the Terra Volcano family, a sentiment echoed by the cozy, handcrafted woodwork of their headquarters.

Richard’s dedication to providing an educational and exhilarating experience was evident from the start. He shared his knowledge of mountaineering, or “andismo” as it’s known in the Andes, with a passion that was both inspiring and reassuring. As someone who has spent years gathering data on extreme sports conditions and safety ratings, I appreciated Richard’s professionalism and attention to detail.

The Ascent and the Descent

The day of the climb dawned bright and clear, the perfect backdrop for our adventure. Richard picked me up from my campground, a thoughtful gesture that saved me an early morning trek to the trailhead. Equipped with all the necessary gear, including a sliding suit for our descent, we set off on our journey.

The ascent was a test of endurance, a long uphill hike that challenged both body and mind. Back at Terra Volcano HQ, we celebrated our successful climb with cold local beers and delicious snacks, a fitting end to an unforgettable day. As I reflected on the experience, I realized that this adventure was not just a highlight of my trip, but a defining moment in my life.
