Great day away from the city in a beautiful national park - It was great to get out of the city for a day and see this beautiful national park. The logistics of the trip were smooth, and Beto was a fun and friendly guide. My son and I both really enjoyed the outing. We went on a rainy day and unfortunately could not see the volcanoes, but we it was a good hike all the same. I liked the idea of this trek--a hike through the fields and forests of the park, with a modest climb to a great viewpoint for the volcanoes. On a clear day, I'm sure it would be spectacular.
Bear in mind that, even though this trek does not summit either volcano, you will be hiking at 12,000 feet/4,000 meters. Even the modest climb of this hike might leave you winded.

Excellent First High Altitude Hike in Mexico - Carlos was an excellent guide. Knowledgeable and passionate about what he's doing, where he's going and who he's doing it with. I had only been at this elevation once before (summiting Mt. Fuji in Japan) and I've experienced altitude sickness before. I had already been in Mexico City for 5 days, so I was acclimatizing. I picked this hike because I wanted to strike a balance between nothing particularly exertive and seeing natural sights and wonders. I was bang on the money. Though the air was thin, at no point in time did the hike feel out of my depth. Lots of gentle swooping valleys, alpine grasslands, old pine forests; complete with a glacial river/waterfall at the end, and icicles forming on the diverse flora. What a surprise!
To speak of Carlos' excellent character, there was an older gentleman in our group who needed a lift back towards the end of the hike. Carlos hopped in the van and grabbed him so as to spare the man any additional fatigue and strain. That's great support! The gentleman landed in CDMX at midnight prior and there was likely no time for him to adjust to the conditions.
Though this hike was very very satisfactory, (like any good hike) it leaves you hungry for more! I'm likely to return to Mexico in order to do the multiday hike up Iztaccihuatl with Carlos' operator Travesias!
Muchas Gracias Carlos!!

Carlos was a great guide.... - Carlos was a great guide. Knowledgeable about flora and fauna, happy to answer my 11 year olds many questions, also great information on both volcanoes. Early start and a long but satisfying trek.

Salva and Bernardo were... - Salva and Bernardo were great guides and always checked in with everyone. Plenty of food and liquids provided. The hike was generally fine (in terms of difficulty), but due to the high altitude and heat, it's a bit harder uphill. A bit dusty, so be prepared to get dirty. Lovely hike and some nice views!

Best for people in above average fitness level - This experience is a wonderful hike with amazing views of the two volcanoes. The guides were very helpful and will be sure to allow everyone to walk at their own pace. Be aware, this is a 9-10 mile hike at 13000 feet of elevation. The paths are well maintained and easy to walk, but the elevation and distance will feel strenuous if you not in decent shape. It is well worth the experience if you are up for it!

Wonderful Experience - had a great time (57), my brother less so.
You do need to be relatively fit (able to walk up slopes for say 50m or so) - remember there's less oxygen per inhale there! It's more than a GB walk in a town park. Stretches of steep/long up, and generally level.
The guides were great, hanging back with my brother.
You get "snacks" - a full pack lunch for any appetite- and plenty water in your rucksack, and THEN a full Mexican meal afterwards (about 2pm) in an open-air cantina on the road back down.
No-one asked for money or tips either, so nice to feel a genuine part of the trip and not just a money-making opportunity.
(I did give something due to the extra input for my brother)
You stop about the tree-line, the top (half the height of Everest!)would take 10 hours (just the ascent). It was about 8 degrees C at start (you need a fleece, trousers and jacket) but I was down to shorts and T-shirt by the end.
You "hill walk" from about 3,500m to just below 4,000m, I think the guides said 300m of ascent (and back down) in 5 hours, with rests.

Don’t go on Monday - The guide Carlos was great, had a lot of good information on the volcanoes and kept the group together. Wish we had known in advance that the park is closed on Monday so we couldn’t get to the volcano vista. Overall good trip, good snacks, and good tacos after.
