Sailing with Silence: A Cetacean Adventure in the Canary Islands
Drawn by the allure of a noise-free ocean adventure, I set sail on the Canary Islands’ first fully electric catamaran. Join me as I recount a day filled with dolphins, whales, and the unexpected beauty of the sea.
Setting Sail on a Silent Adventure
The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over Puerto Calero as I boarded the first fully electric catamaran in the Canary Islands. The promise of a noise and emission-free journey was music to my ears, and I couldn’t wait to experience the ocean in its purest form. As a surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the sea, but this time, it wasn’t the waves I was chasing. Instead, it was the majestic cetaceans that call these waters home.
The crew, Gonzalo and Sylvie, welcomed us with warm smiles and a quick briefing. Their passion for the ocean was evident, and their commitment to preserving its beauty was inspiring. With only 12 of us on board, there was plenty of space to relax and soak in the sun. As we set sail, the calm sea and gentle breeze promised a perfect day ahead.
Dancing with Dolphins
For the first hour, the ocean seemed to be playing hard to get. But just as I was beginning to wonder if the dolphins had taken the day off, a small group of bottle-nosed dolphins appeared, dancing around the bow of our catamaran. Their playful antics were mesmerizing, and I found myself grinning from ear to ear as they swam just a few meters away.
The highlight, however, was when a calf joined the group, its youthful exuberance a joy to behold. As we drifted quietly, the hydrophone on board allowed us to listen to their clicks and whistles, a symphony of the sea that I’ll never forget. It was a reminder of the wonders that lie beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered.
A Whale of a Time
Our journey continued as we followed another boat, leading us to a group of pilot whales. These gentle giants moved gracefully through the water, and for the next hour and a half, we were treated to a spectacle of nature’s finest. With ample opportunities to snap photos, I was grateful for the chance to capture these moments.
As we made our way back to shore, a flying fish made a surprise appearance, gliding across the bow for over 100 meters. It was a fitting end to an unforgettable day. The crew’s dedication to the environment was evident as they collected floating plastic on our return journey, a small but significant gesture in preserving the ocean’s beauty.
This catamaran adventure was more than just a trip; it was a reminder of the magic that the ocean holds. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-time explorer, this experience is one that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the sea and its inhabitants.
