Exploring Isla de la Plata: A Snorkeling Adventure on Ecuador’s Coast

When the Ecuadorian coast beckoned, I couldn’t resist the call. Join me as I explore Isla de la Plata, the “Mini Galapagos,” where birdwatching and snorkeling with sea turtles create unforgettable memories.

Setting Sail to Isla de la Plata

The Ecuadorian coast had been calling my name for quite some time, and I finally answered. With my partner’s blessing and a backpack full of essentials, I set off for Puerto Lopez, eager to explore the wonders of Isla de la Plata, often dubbed the “Mini Galapagos.” The journey from Guayaquil was a scenic drive along the coast, offering a glimpse into the diverse topography and climate zones of Ecuador. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and this trip promised to be another thrilling adventure.

Upon arrival, I boarded a yacht that would take us to the island. The boat ride was a little over an hour, but the time flew by as we were treated to the sight of sea birds soaring above and even a couple of manta rays leaping out of the water. The anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable, and I couldn’t wait to dive into the experience.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Isla de la Plata is a haven for bird enthusiasts, and I was no exception. As we disembarked, the island greeted us with a symphony of bird calls. Blue-footed boobies, with their striking azure feet, were a highlight. I was fortunate enough to witness a father booby incubating two eggs, a rare and intimate glimpse into their world. The red-billed tropicbirds, with their elegant flight, added to the spectacle, and I found myself lost in the beauty of it all.

The island’s trails offered more than just birdwatching. The landscape was a tapestry of colors, with the sun casting a golden hue over the terrain. It was easy to see why Isla de la Plata is often compared to the Galapagos, minus the reptiles. The diversity of flora and fauna was astounding, and I felt a deep connection to the natural world around me.

Snorkeling with Giants

After a morning of birding, it was time to don my snorkeling gear and explore the underwater world. The water, though not as clear as in the summer months, was teeming with life. Rainbow fish darted around, their vibrant colors a feast for the eyes. But the true stars of the show were the giant sea turtles, gracefully gliding through the water. Swimming alongside these gentle giants was a humbling experience, reminding me of the ocean’s vastness and the life it sustains.

As we made our way back to the mainland, a pod of dolphins decided to join us, putting on a playful show near the boat. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day. Back on land, our guides, Yamille and Simon, took us to a local restaurant where we indulged in fresh fish, a fitting conclusion to our coastal adventure.

Isla de la Plata may be known as the “poor man’s Galapagos,” but its riches are undeniable. The memories of this day will linger long after the journey home, a testament to the magic of the Ecuadorian coast. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend snorkeling with marine life—it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
