Puerto Maldonado - Amazon Rainforest Hike - Caiman Spotting
Puerto Maldonado - Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed and transported to our office for a briefing about the excursion. The journey begins with a 1.5 to 2-hour car ride to the Tambopata River (48 km on paved roads and 18 km on dirt roads), followed by a 10-minute trip to our lodge, where lunch will be served.
While traveling on the dirt road, travelers can enjoy views of butterfly swarms, traditional Amazonian communities, birds flying overhead, and wildlife such as agoutis and monkeys. Upon arrival, guests will be received and accommodated at our lodge. Visitors will then have the chance to explore the 40-meter canopy tower, offering breathtaking views of the rainforest.
From the tower, one can see miles of untouched forest in every direction, with animals like macaws, toucans, and other vibrant birds active in the canopy. At night, a guided walk will reveal fascinating creatures such as tree frogs, possibly snakes, tarantulas, stick insects, and other nocturnal animals, followed by dinner.
Tambopata National Reserve - This reserve is renowned for its protection of wildlife, flora, and fauna, as well as the stunning beauty of the southeastern Peruvian subtropical rainforest. It encompasses diverse habitats like aguajales, pacales, clay licks, chestnut groves, terrace forests, riparian forests, and lakes, creating unique ecosystems with a rich variety of species, many of which have limited ranges.
Puerto Maldonado is a prime destination for nature tourism and environmental education, thanks to its scenic resources and iconic flora and fauna. Highlights include oxbow lakes such as Sandoval, Cocococha, and Sachavacayoc, and the Chuncho and Colorado macaw clay licks, home to hundreds of psittacines.
Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - Full Jungle Exploration
Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - The day starts early at 4:30 a.m. with a 1.5-hour journey upstream on the Tambopata River to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick in the Tambopata Reserve. This is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the stunning natural landscapes and wildlife, with the possibility of spotting the elusive South American jaguar.
Upon arrival, guests will witness an incredible wildlife spectacle as hundreds of parrots and various macaw species gather to consume clay, including the mealy parrot, blue-headed, orange-cheeked, dusky-headed, white-eyed, and large macaws like the blue, yellow, red, and green. This is truly an unforgettable experience!
Mid-morning, guests return to the lodge to enjoy its amenities. Around midday, there is a chance to swim in the river, a refreshing activity enjoyed multiple times. Lunch is served at the lodge.
In the afternoon, an ethnobotanical jungle walk offers insights into medicinal plants and a chance to see more mammals and large trees. Dinner and relaxation follow.
Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - This site is a major attraction, being one of the largest in the country and ideal for birdwatching, especially macaws. The clay lick is famous for its spectacular sightings and diverse psittacids (macaws, parrots, and others), including Ara ararauna, Ara macao, Ara chloropterus, Ara colounico, and Ara militaris.
Birds utilize this natural resource to supplement their diet and neutralize toxins from fruits and wild seeds. The landscape, shaped by river erosion, reveals soils rich in mineral salts (potassium, sodium, and others) and organic materials.
Canopy Tower - Puerto Maldonado City
Puerto Maldonado - Before breakfast, guests have the option to embark on another jungle walk to revisit the Canopy Tower, where they can observe colorful birds such as toucans, oropendolas, hummingbirds, trogons, woodpeckers, nunbirds, tanagers, jacamars, and more. Depending on weather conditions, the sunrise from the treetops is spectacular. Afterward, guests return to the lodge for breakfast.
Finally, guests will be transported back to Puerto Maldonado, ensuring timely arrival for flights to Lima or Cuzco. In the city, arrangements will be made to ensure guests catch their flights to Lima or Cuzco on time.
