The original church is very old, with its initial foundation dating back to around 1502. It was destroyed by fire during the War of Restoration in 1863.
The construction of the current temple began in 1870, underwent reconstructions in 1929, and was finally completed in 1956.
Its style is modern-Victorian with two impressive towers at the front.
In 1996, the Diocese of Puerto Plata was established, and this cathedral became its seat.
