Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center - Palawan is renowned for its commitment to preserving its ecosystem, collaborating with various organizations to balance nature and infrastructure. It is celebrated as one of the cleanest and most wildlife-friendly places. The Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center embodies this ethos, focusing on preserving endangered species, particularly two crocodile species. The center features concrete structures and outdoor pens housing hundreds of crocodiles, from hatchlings to adults, offering tourists a memorable experience.
- Essentials for the tour include mosquito repellent, a towelette for the tropical climate, a water jug, and snacks. Dress appropriately for a comfortable journey.
Mitra’s Ranch - Known as Rancho Sta. Monica, Mitra’s Ranch was once a private estate. It offers stunning views of Puerto Princesa City and features activities like trampolining, horseback riding, and zip-lining.
Baker’s Hill - Famous for its Baker’s Hill Hopia/Jopia, this spot is a must-visit for food lovers. The addictive treats, including pastillas, are a highlight. Allocate a generous food budget as the offerings are irresistible. The landscaped gardens and playground make it ideal for family outings, and the Pheasant peacock is a sight to behold. Baker’s Hill, a theme park, is also known for its reasonably priced baked goods, making it a great place to buy pasalubong. The area offers a variety of food products, including cashew nuts, hopia, and brownies, along with several restaurants.
Binuatan Creations - This shop offers native products, including handloom-made mats, table runners, purses, bags, and more, all of export quality at reasonable prices. Binuatan Creations Handloom Weaving uses Palawan’s indigenous fibers to create functional products. The company transforms local materials like amumuting, buri, or abaca fibers into high-quality goods like placemats and handbags, exporting them to countries like the USA. Visitors can observe and participate in the weaving process. The products, though pricey, are of exceptional quality, making each purchase world-class.
Immaculate Conception Cathedral - Located along Rizal Avenue in Barangay Liwanag, this historic cathedral was once a small church during the Spanish occupation (circa 1872). It was developed into a cathedral in 1961, preserving its edifice. The design features angular structures and pointed arches.
Plaza Cuartel - Despite its vibrant appearance, Puerto Princesa City has a dark history, evident in Plaza Cuartel, a small park in Barangay Liwanag. The park, with its concrete pavements, trees, and benches, holds the ruins of an old garrison and tunnels, marking the site of the Palawan Massacre during World War II. On December 14, 1944, Japanese forces burned alive 150 American prisoners of war, with only eleven surviving.
Puerto Princesa City Baywalk Park - This long promenade beside the bay is Puerto Princesa’s version of Manila Bay, offering a cleaner, fresher, and safer environment. The walkway, lined with palm trees, flowers, and lamp posts, provides a scenic view of the bay.
Puerto Princesa International Airport - No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without purchasing souvenirs and pasalubong for friends and family. Allocate a portion of the travel budget for these items. For budget-friendly options, visit “Island Souvenir Shops” and “Tiange Tiange,” recommended by locals. Tiangge-Tiangge offers a variety of stalls selling affordable shirts, summer outfits, cashew nuts, delicacies, and handcrafted items like baskets and bamboo décor.
Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village - Located in Sta. Monica, this garden is a sanctuary for various Southeast Asian butterfly species. It combines nature and culture, showcasing the unique beauty of the province known as the “Last Frontier of the Philippines.” The garden features tropical butterflies and live exhibits of their natural predators, offering insight into their ecology.
