Uljanik was established in 1856 in the strategically chosen bay of Pula as a shipyard for the Austro-Venetian Navy (from 1867 to 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Navy). The foundation stone was laid on December 9 by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, marking the shipyard’s anniversary, one of the oldest operational shipyards worldwide. It was named after an islet once covered with olive trees, where now the steel and hull fabrication workshops are located. One olive tree has been preserved as a symbol.
