Puno - Uros (Floating Islands) - Amantani
Uros Floating Islands - Guests will be collected from their hotel in the historic center of Puno between 7:45 and 8:00 in the morning. Before boarding the motorboat to Uros Island, there will be a brief stop at the boat pier where snacks and bottled water can be purchased. Once on board, a local musician will welcome everyone with Andean Folkloric music. The guide will introduce himself and the boat captain, then provide a brief overview of the day’s itinerary on Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. The first stop will be at the iconic floating islands of Uros. During the journey from the mainland to one of the Uros Islands, passengers can observe totora plants growing on Lake Titicaca. These plants are a fundamental food source and serve as a maintenance system that the Uros use to sustain the islands’ existence. As the boat docks, local women in traditional attire will warmly welcome visitors to their home. The island’s leader will demonstrate how the islands are constructed using totora plants and share a few words in their native language, Aymara. The locals are known for their handicrafts, which are available for purchase. There is an option to sail on a traditional totora reed boat (10 Soles) to the main island of Uros. Visitors can also have their passports stamped here as a souvenir. From here, the boat ride to Amantani islands will begin. Passengers can walk up to the open deck on the boat’s upper level to take photos of the floating islands they pass.
Amantani Island - Upon arrival at Amantani Island, locals will extend a warm welcome. The head of the family will escort guests to their house, where they will spend the night in a private room. A freshly cooked authentic Peruvian meal will be served for lunch. After lunch, there will be free time to take a nap or stroll through the cobblestone streets of this beautiful island. In the evening, the guide will meet guests to start an uphill walk to the two ancient Incan temples, Pachatata and Pachamama. These temples offer a stunning panoramic view of Lake Titicaca, and visitors can witness the sunset from here. After returning from this short tour, the host family will have dinner prepared. After enjoying a Peruvian meal for dinner (with vegetarian options available), guests may join the local folkloric musical event. The host will assist in dressing guests in traditional attire and escort them to the community hall where the event is held. Young boys from the island play live Andean Folkloric Music while visitors dance to the tunes.
Amantani - Taquile - Puno
Taquile Island - After breakfast with the family, the journey continues. Guests will board the ferry to Taquile Island. Rising from the green waters of Peru’s Lake Titicaca is the small island of Taquile, where local villagers have developed a thriving industry of knit handicrafts, crafted by the men of the community. Taquile is home to a Quechua population of 2,000 people, primarily farmers, fishermen, and renowned weavers. The fine textiles from Taquile are famous worldwide and are even protected as a UNESCO World Heritage subject. Unlike the traditional view of knitting and textile work as women’s domain, it is the men of Taquile Island who perform much of the intricate thread work. The craftwork is divided between weaving and knitting; women handle the weaving, while knitting is men’s work. The tradition begins early, with boys on the island learning their trade at the age of 8. Among these crafts are the iconic chuyo hats worn by many locals. Women also make yarn and perform other tasks related to creating these items. The island’s 2,000 residents are well aware of the tourist appeal of their charming island and its traditional Spanish garments. They have established a unique model for their visitor industry, where villagers collectively manage tourist activities and attractions. Lunch will be at a local restaurant (not included, costing 20 Soles). After lunch, guests will board the boat back to Puno. Upon arrival, they will be met and transferred back to their hotel in the historic center of Puno.
