Board a spacious powerboat and journey north for approximately 40 minutes across the Strait of Magellan. With some luck, you might spot panda dolphins playfully leaping from the choppy grey waters.
- Isla Magdalena - Arrive at the small, rocky Magdalena Island, also known as Los Pinguinos Natural Monument, a protected nature reserve and park since 1982, serving as a breeding ground for Magellanic penguins. Even before docking, witness thousands of penguins crowding the shores and hear their distinctive calls. During the summer, around 120,000 penguins inhabit the island.
Disembark and spend about an hour exploring with your guide, staying on the designated visitor trail. These curious birds, standing about 2 feet (61 cm) tall, may cross your path and approach you, but you will be advised not to touch or feed them.
On either side of the trail, observe hundreds of burrows in the ground, each about a foot (30 cm) in diameter, housing a pair of penguins. Watch as penguins pop in and out of the burrows, where eggs are laid, and others dig new burrows by flinging dirt with their webbed feet. Your guide may also point out cormorants and Andean seagulls on the island.
Reach the island’s highest point and enter a lighthouse featuring exhibits that explain the penguins’ habitat and breeding cycles, the history of the strait, and the rich ecosystems of nearby islands.
- Isla Marta - Warm up with coffee and enjoy biscuits (provided) before departing the island. On the return journey, weather permitting, the captain may pass by Isla Marta, offering opportunities to photograph sea lions and elephant seals resting on the rocky outcrop.
- Punta Arenas - After a delightful morning with penguins, the tour concludes in Punta Arenas at the same meeting point as in the morning (José Nogueira #1255, Punta Arenas).
