As you ascend from the square to the castle, the stone houses become more densely packed, and the maze of narrow vaulted lanes grows more intricate. The village boasts around 33 churches, with the Monastery of Profitis Ilias being the most renowned, showcasing a small collection of ethnographic materials and old icons. • Megalochori - Traditional Village - Megalochori traditional village (45 minutes) features typical Cycladic houses and neoclassical buildings. Situated between Pyrgos, Emporio, and Akrotiri, it is less than 10 km from Fira. The village consists of hundreds of small, white-painted houses built closely together and is known for its beautiful churches. It blends traditional architecture with vaulted houses and stone-cobbled narrow pathways (calderimia) and has a vibrant community with a sizable permanent population.
