- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin, is a medieval Islamic-era fortress in Cairo, Egypt. Constructed by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and expanded by later Egyptian rulers, it served as Egypt’s government seat and the rulers’ residence for nearly 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Its strategic location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo offers a commanding view of the city. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects. Today, it is a preserved historic site.
