The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and boasts the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities worldwide. It showcases an extensive array of artifacts from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era.
The building’s architect was chosen through an international competition in 1895, the first of its kind, won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, housing some of the world’s most magnificent ancient masterpieces.
- Cairo Citadel - Visit the Citadel of Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, where you can explore The Alabaster Mosque Of Mohamed Ali Pasha. The Citadel is one of the most iconic monuments in Islamic Cairo and among the most impressive medieval defensive fortresses. Its strategic location on the Muqattam Hills provided a formidable defensive position and offers, as it still does today, an unrestricted panoramic view of Cairo.
Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi initiated the construction of a fortress over the Muqattam Hills in (572 AH/1176 AD), but it was completed during the reign of Sultan al-Kamel ibn al-Adel (604 AH/1207 AD), who made it the official residence of Egypt’s rulers. In the mid-nineteenth century, Khedive Ismail moved the official residence to Abdeen Palace in downtown Cairo.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Explore Khan El Khalili Bazaar. Khan el-Khalili is a renowned bazaar and souq in Cairo’s historic center. Established as a trade center during the Mamluk era and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for tourists and Egyptians alike. It is home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. The name Khan el-Khalili originally referred to a single building in the area; today, it encompasses the entire shopping district.
