Besh Barmag Mountain - Beshbarmag
On the return journey, the otherwise monotonous scenery north of Baku is suddenly transformed by the striking silhouette of the 520m Beshbarmaq Dash (Five Finger Mountain). This mystical peak features a rocky cluster of phallic crags atop a steep grassy ridge. Climbing to the summit is highly recommended, not only for the stunning views of the Caspian Sea but also to experience Azerbaijan’s unique interpretation of ‘Islam’. Many locals visit seeking good fortune, a child, or solutions to their problems through a blend of prayer, sacrifice, chanting, and animistic rock-kissing rituals. Everything is done in threes: carry three small stones to the top, sip three times from a cup of holy water, kiss the sacred rock three times, and chant your wish… three times. Assisting visitors are white-capped holy men found in rocky alcoves, marked by a samovar, a few blankets, and photogenically fluttering votive ribbons.
