The tour begins at Lallybroch – Midhope Castle, the ancestral residence of Jamie Fraser. Scenes from Outlander were filmed at Midhope Castle, located on the outskirts of the Hopetoun Estate near South Queensferry.
Midhope Castle was originally constructed in the 15th century by John Martyne, the laird of Medhope. It underwent reconstruction in the mid-1600s and has largely retained its appearance since then.
The interior of Midhope Castle is not open to the public.
Midhope Castle, a 16th-century tower house, serves as Lallybroch (also known as Broch Tuarach) in Outlander. Inherited by Jamie from his parents, Brian and Ellen, Lallybroch is also the home of Jamie’s sister, Jenny, her husband Ian Murray, and their children. Lallybroch plays a significant role in Jamie Fraser’s life in Outlander. In the series, Jamie affectionately calls Claire “Sassenach.”
- Culross - Culross is Scotland’s most well-preserved example of a 17th and 18th-century burgh.
Mercat Cross, located in the center of Culross, served as the focal point of Cranesmuir.
Geillis Duncan’s house and the town square, where Geillis is condemned for witchcraft, are notable locations.
Jamie and Claire save the thief, Tammas, when his ear is nailed to the post.
Laoghaire’s home is visible near Mercat Cross on Little Causeway. Several interior scenes were filmed inside the Palace.
Built in 1597 by Sir George Bruce, the Laird of Carnock, it was visited by King James VI in 1617. The National Trust for Scotland now owns and maintains it.
White-harled houses with red-tiled roofs line the steep cobbled streets that lead from the market cross to the hilltop abbey. At the center is the ochre-colored palace with its beautifully restored period garden, featuring herbs, fruits, vegetables, and rare Scots Dumpy hens. The Palace is featured in the TV series Outlander.
- Drummond Gardens - The Castle Gardens were depicted as the Palace of Versailles in an episode of the TV drama Outlander. Jamie and Claire encounter Black Jack Randall at a garden party, where Jamie challenges him to a duel.
Drummond Castle Gardens, protected as a category A listed building — unlike the B listed castle — draw thousands of visitors annually and are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland. The gardens, complete with peacocks, feature ancient yew hedges and the remaining beech tree planted by Queen Victoria in 1842.
