• Midhope Castle - Explore Midhope Castle on the Hopetoun Estate, famously known as Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s ancestral home!
• Blackness Castle - Blackness Castle is a striking 15th-century fortress. In Outlander, it stands in for Fort William, where Jamie was whipped by Captain Randall and where his father died watching his punishment. In the mid-season finale of season 1, Jamie breaks into the castle to rescue Claire from Black Jack, leaping into the water below.
• Linlithgow Palace - Linlithgow Palace was used to depict the notorious Wentworth Prison. Here, Jamie is tortured and raped by Captain ‘Black Jack’ Randall. While the torture and rape scenes were mainly filmed at Wardpark Studios in Cumbernauld, some parts of the palace, including a staircase and some basement rooms, were used. In Episode 1.15, Claire is seen sneaking around the dungeon cells searching for Jamie. A brief scene was also shot at the palace’s entrance/gatehouse, where Claire meets Murtagh and faints from illness.
• Doune Castle - Featured in many season 1 episodes of Outlander, Doune Castle represents Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan Mackenzie. Here, we meet key characters like Murtagh, Mrs. Fitz, Laoghaire MacKenzie, Colum MacKenzie, his wife Letitia, and their son Hamish. The castle’s large courtyard, great hall, and surrounding grounds were extensively used for filming. Interestingly, a set replicating Doune Castle’s kitchen was built to facilitate filming. Outlander fans first see Doune Castle when Frank and Claire visit the ruins of Castle Leoch. Later, Claire is brought there by Dougal after being rescued from ‘Black Jack’ and helping Jamie with his injury.
• Culross - The charming town of Culross in Fife has been featured in several Outlander episodes. The Mercat Cross square, the Study House, the palace gardens, and the West Kirk outside the village were all used as filming locations. The Mercat Cross square appears in many scenes, including the one where Gellis (and nearly Claire) is hanged as a witch and a gruesome scene involving an ear and a pillory. The buildings around the square were painted blue for filming, and ‘The Study’ house became Gellis Duncan’s home. The garden at Culross Palace stood in for Castle Leoch’s herb gardens, and the palace’s Withdrawing Room served as Gellis’s parlour. Nearby, Culross West Kirk is the eerie Black Kirk. The town is best remembered as Cranesmuir in season 1.
• Aberdour Castle and Gardens - In the novel ‘Outlander,’ Jamie is rescued from Wentworth Prison after suffering at the hands of Black Jack Randall. In the second novel ‘Dragonfly in Amber,’ Jamie is taken to the Abbey St Anne de Beaupré in France. However, in season 1, episode 16 ‘To Ransom a Man’s Soul,’ Jamie is taken to an Abbey in Scotland to recover from his injuries after being rescued from Wentworth. It’s here that Claire mends Jamie’s hand and reveals her time travel to the priest. Aberdour Castle and its grounds represent the Abbey in Scotland.
• Dysart Harbour & Harbourmaster’s House - In season 2, episode 1 ‘Through a Glass, Darkly,’ Claire and Jamie arrive in Le Havre, France, with Murtagh. After rescuing Jamie from Wentworth Prison and escaping to Paris, they reach Le Havre, where they discuss changing the future. Claire sees some of Sainte Germain’s men with smallpox being taken into a warehouse, which is Jamie’s cousin Jared’s storehouse. The Harbourmaster’s House and the west side of Dysart Harbour were used to depict the port of Le Havre.
• Falkland - The small town of Falkland in the Kingdom of Fife was used to portray Inverness in the Outlander series. Claire and Frank arrive there on their second honeymoon and meet Mrs. Baird, the enigmatic owner of their bed and breakfast, and the local minister, Reverend Wakefield. Like Frank and Claire, you can drive into town and park on High Street across from Mrs. Baird’s B&B, the real-life Covenanter Hotel.
