- Palácio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - The Palace of Queluz and its gardens stand as a premier example of late 18th-century Portuguese architecture.
Commissioned by Pedro III, the spouse of D. Maria I (1734-1816), and serving as a royal residence, this palace exemplifies the finest Portuguese architecture of the late 18th century.
The palace is further enhanced by a significant museum of decorative art, showcasing collections primarily from the royal family, displayed in a fitting environment. Many rooms feature rocaille-style decorations, including the exquisite Throne Room, adorned with mirrored walls and splendid carved gilded woodwork.
The surrounding gardens are adorned with fountains and ornamental ponds, where water gracefully spouts from mythological figures. The sculpture ensemble around the Neptune Basin is particularly striking.
- Centro Histórico de Sintra - This charming town at the base of the mountain range of the same name has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site due to its unique features. A special category, “cultural landscape,” was created to acknowledge its natural beauty and historic buildings in both the town and mountains. The mountains, rich in lush vegetation, are part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
- Parque e Palácio de Monserrate - This enchanting Romantic park was envisioned by William Beckford, who was captivated by the Serra de Sintra.
The park and palace of Monserrate, once a farm with orchards and fields, were first conceptualized by Gerard DeVisme, who leased the land from the Melo e Castro family in the 18th century. He was succeeded by William Beckford and later by Francis Cook.
It was Francis Cook, the first Viscount of Monserrate, along with landscape painter William Stockdale, botanist William Nevill, and master gardener James Burt, who crafted the park’s contrasting scenes. These include winding footpaths among ruins, nooks, waterfalls, and lakes, creating an initially seemingly chaotic layout.
Native Portuguese species, such as arbutus, holly, and cork oak trees, blend with plants from all five continents, inviting visitors to explore a global variety of flora, from Australia to Mexico and Japan. In total, there are over 2,500 species.
Inside the palace, notable rooms include the Music Room and the opulent reception areas, such as the Indian living room, dining room, and library, all located on the ground floor. The palace tour also leads visitors to the first floor, where the private apartments were situated.
- Cascais - Located near the sea and originally a fishing village, Cascais experienced significant growth in the 14th century as a key stop for ships en route to Lisbon, becoming a bustling port.
However, it was in the latter half of the 19th century, with the rise of sea bathing, that Cascais transformed into a fashionable summer destination. This change was driven by King Dom Luís I of Portugal, who in 1870 converted the Fortaleza da Cidadela into the summer residence of the Portuguese monarchy. The nobility quickly followed suit, constructing palaces and beautiful villas in the town, transforming the former fishing village’s appearance.
Cascais also began attracting visitors eager to enjoy seaside strolls, with access improved by the 1889 opening of the railway line between Pedrouços and Cascais. Today, Cascais is a vibrant and cosmopolitan town that retains much of its aristocratic charm.
A walk through its streets is highly recommended, where visitors can find high-quality shops or relax at one of the many outdoor cafés and restaurants.
- Boca do Inferno - The Boca do Inferno (meaning the Jaws of Hell), a coastal inlet surrounded by steep rocks and caves, remains a natural wonder drawing thousands of visitors to witness the sea’s raw power.
