• Quetzaltenango - The tour begins with a convenient pick-up from the lobby of your hotel in the central area of Xela or near the central park. Our professional team, including a tour guide and bus driver, will ensure a timely and hassle-free pick-up. The adventure starts at 8:00 AM, allowing ample time for breakfast and preparation for the exciting journey to the Volcano and Lagoon of Chicabal.

The journey takes just one hour. Upon arrival at the volcano’s vicinity, a 4WD vehicle will be ready to transport us to the entrance, where we will purchase our admission tickets.

It’s important to wear hiking shoes, as the weather is cool and damp, and the terrain can be slippery. Consider bringing mosquito repellent, sun protection, and some nutritious snacks like raisins, granola bars, or nuts for extra energy if needed.

• Laguna Chicabal - After reaching the volcano’s entrance, we will proceed to the viewpoint for a stunning view of the lagoon. Take time to enjoy the natural beauty, tranquility, and fresh air before descending to the crater lagoon’s shore.

Upon reaching the shore, you will experience a welcoming energy. This is a sacred site for the Mayan people, who perform ceremonies, pray, and seek favors from their ancestors here. With permission from the Mayan priest and indigenous participants, you might witness a ceremony. Even if no ceremony is occurring, you’ll see many bouquets adorning the shore, left as offerings for requested favors.

If the weather cooperates, you will enjoy a clear view of the entire lagoon and might even witness a local legend: the Mayan God descending from the heavens as mist, skimming the water, and returning to the sky.

The Volcano and Lagoon of Chicabal are essential stops when visiting Xela. Embark on this gentle hike to explore the volcano’s water-filled crater, revered as a sacred site by the Mayans.

In Guatemala, only two volcanoes feature a lagoon within their craters, and this is one of them. Many Mayans visit the crater lagoon to conduct ceremonies, connect with their ancestors and deities, and immerse themselves in nature.

As this is a sacred site, swimming in the lagoon is prohibited. However, visitors can still gain insight into Mayan beliefs, whether witnessing a ceremony or not. Even without a ceremony, the bouquets left on the shore as offerings or expressions of gratitude provide a meaningful experience.
