- Plaza de la Independencia (Plaza Grande) - Begin the day by exploring the lively streets and squares of the largest historical center in the Americas, embarking on a unique sensory adventure. Together, traditions, history, and local life of this captivating city will be unveiled.
The journey leads along the street of the seven crosses, offering views of old colonial houses and church facades, before arriving at Quito’s main square, known as Independence Square, where the Government Palace is located.
- Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania - Delve deeper into Quito’s heart, passing historic buildings crafted from volcanic stones. The breathtaking views of the sculpted Compania Church are only outshone by its gold-covered interiors.
To learn more about this and other churches, the route continues to the workshops of master craftsmen from “The Escuela Quiteña.” These artists preserve the secrets of colonial art in Quito’s churches and museums. They have been responsible for restoring altars and paintings of these historic churches. Here, their secrets will be revealed, and there will be an opportunity to try artistic skills to create personal crafts.
- Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco - Continuing through these historic streets, there is a chance to meet a local family that makes traditional sweets called colaciones.
Nearby, at Plaza San Francisco, is the Church and Convent of San Francisco, part of the City of Quito World Heritage Site, the first site ever inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1978. It is the oldest and most significant religious site in Ecuador. The vast complex includes 13 cloisters, three churches, a plaza, more than 3,500 works of religious art, and a library with thousands of books and historic documents. The convent was built by Brother Jodoco Ricke for the Order of the Franciscan Monks, between 1537 and 1560. The main church, an imposing baroque structure, was completed a century later, along with additional cloisters.
Today, the complex continues to house Franciscan monks and also serves as a major cultural and religious center, attracting nearly one million visitors annually.
- Calle de las Siete Cruces - The Street of the 7 Crosses is one of the city’s iconic areas within the UNESCO heritage zone. Quito’s Old Town is home to hundreds of artists, artisans, and local experts. Several artisan workshops will be visited, and living icons of Quito’s cultural scene will be met. The guide will adapt to cultural interaction preferences to select unique experiences. Whether a foodie, cultural enthusiast, music lover, art connoisseur, aroma seeker, photographer, or any other travel purpose, local experts will be paired accordingly.
- Calle La Ronda - The next stop is La Ronda, a historical and bohemian neighborhood of the city. It is a traditional street associated with the art, crafts, gastronomy, and fun of Quito. It is also the oldest street in Quito.
Here, a traditional coffee shop will be visited to try some interesting ice cream flavors or a traditional sweet, depending on the weather.
- El Panecillo - Finally, the “Panecillo” hillside will be visited, offering breathtaking views of the old and modern city surrounded by the rolling Andes Mountains. At the top is one of Quito’s most iconic monuments: the Panecillo Virgin. It is constructed of nearly seven thousand pieces of aluminum, and what makes this representation unique are the wings: it is the only Virgin Mary with wings in the world.
- Quito Old Town - Many hidden gems throughout the entire old town of Quito will be uncovered.
