- Hassan Tower - The Hassan Tower, located in Rabat, is one of Morocco’s most iconic historical landmarks. Constructed at the end of the 12th century during the reign of the Almohad Sultan Yacoub Al Mansour, it was intended to be the minaret of a vast mosque that would become the largest in the Muslim world. The Sultan’s death in 1199 halted the construction, leaving the tower unfinished.
Built from red sandstone, the Hassan Tower now stands at approximately 44 meters, nearly half of its originally planned height. Its architecture is distinguished by geometric patterns and decorative arches characteristic of Almohad art. Inside, a ramp replaces stairs, allowing for horseback ascent to the top in the past.
- Mausoleum of Mohammad V - The Mausoleum of Mohammed V, located in Rabat, is one of Morocco’s most significant monuments. It was constructed to house the tomb of King Mohammed V, the father of Moroccan independence, who passed away in 1961. The building was completed in 1971 under the reign of his son, King Hassan II.
The mausoleum is notable for its traditional Moroccan architecture, combining elegance and refinement. It is adorned with white marble, intricately crafted zelliges, carved cedar wood, and a richly decorated ceiling. The green tiled roof symbolizes Islam and the kingdom’s spiritual devotion.
- Royal Palace of Rabat - The Royal Palace, also known as Dar al-Makhzen, is the official residence of the King of Morocco. Present in several cities across the kingdom, the most significant one is located in Rabat, the capital. This palace is not only a residence but also a central hub of the country’s political and administrative power.
- Kasbah des Oudaias - The Kasbah of the Oudayas, situated at the mouth of the Bouregreg River in Rabat, is one of Morocco’s oldest and most beautiful historical sites. Built in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty, it served as a military fortress to protect the city from Atlantic Ocean attacks.
The kasbah is surrounded by imposing walls and features a remarkable monumental gate, the Oudayas Gate, richly decorated with carved motifs. Inside, one finds a peaceful neighborhood with narrow streets and white and blue houses, reminiscent of Andalusian architecture.
- Andalusian Gardens - The Andalusian Garden is located within the Kasbah of the Oudayas in Rabat and is one of the city’s most tranquil and charming spots. It was created in the early 20th century during the French Protectorate, inspired by traditional Andalusian and Moroccan garden design.
The garden is filled with orange trees, palm trees, flowers, and fountains, creating a serene and refreshing atmosphere. Its symmetrical paths, tiled fountains, and shaded areas reflect the elegance of Andalusian art and Islamic landscape architecture.
