Vidin - A city rich in history, marked by the Thracians, Romans, Bulgarians, Hungarians, and Ottomans. For the Romans, it was a border city between civilization and the outer territories, part of the Danubian limes. In the 14th-15th centuries, it was one of the Bulgarian kingdom’s capitals, enduring longer than others. For the Ottomans, it served as a transit point to Vienna and Central Europe. After liberation, when Vidin became part of the 3rd Bulgarian kingdom, it played a role in wars to protect the inner lands.
Enjoy a walking tour of Vidin, visiting the Baba Vida fortress, the armory, the museum, neoclassical buildings, and various temples.
Baba Vida Fortress - Located in Vidin, Northwest Bulgaria, this fortress’s construction began in the 10th century over the ruins of the Roman castle Bononia. Bononia was part of the Danubian Limes, a defensive line with forts and castles to repel barbarians from the Roman Empire.
During the Middle Ages, the fortress served Eastern Romans, Bulgarians, and Hungarians. This stronghold and the nearby town became the capital of the separate Bulgarian kingdom of Ivan Sratsimir. After an unsuccessful crusade against the Ottomans, Baba Vida fell into their hands, becoming a strategic key to Central European routes.
Baba Vida played a significant role in the Serbian-Bulgarian war (1885), following the Union of Bulgaria.
Today, Baba Vida is a popular tourist attraction and resembles a real movie set!
