Reykjavík - Landmannalaugar
Landmannalaugar - The journey begins at Landmannalaugar, the starting point of the Laugavegur Trail. The first exploration includes the Laugahraun lava field and Vonugil canyon, where the stunning and vibrant colors of the rhyolite mountains can be admired. The famous multicolored Mt. Brennisteinsalda will be seen before returning to the campsite, with a chance to enjoy Graenagil and climb Blahnukur if time permits. A delightful dinner will be shared, allowing the group to bond while relaxing in the Landmannalaugar hot springs.

Laugahraun - This expansive, rugged lava field was formed during a 1477 eruption. Its twisted black formations contrast beautifully with the surrounding colorful mountains, creating one of Landmannalaugar’s most dramatic landscapes.
Brennisteinsalda - Often referred to as “the Sulphur Wave,” this multicolored volcano glows with reds, yellows, greens, and blues due to geothermal activity and mineral deposits. It’s one of the most photographed peaks on the trail.
Bláhnjúkur - Known as the Blue Peak, Bláhnjúkur offers sweeping 360° views over Landmannalaugar’s rhyolite mountains, lava fields, and distant glaciers. Its deep blue‑green slopes are a result of ancient volcanic ash.
Landmannalaugar - Landmannalaugar Hot Springs - A natural geothermal oasis where warm streams flow through a lava field. It’s the perfect place to unwind after the first day of hiking, surrounded by colorful mountains and steaming vents.
Landmannalaugar - Hrafntinnusker - Alftavatn
Laugavegur - The day starts with a nourishing breakfast before setting off to the next destination. The journey begins by crossing the Hrafntinnusker black obsidian desert and exploring the vibrantly colored Reykjafjöll rhyolite mountains. The peak of Jökultungur offers incredible views over Fjallabak and Álfavatn lake. A river crossing by foot provides an exhilarating experience! The evening is spent relaxing, enjoying a well-earned dinner, and taking in the views of the Icelandic Highlands.
Distance: 24km (14.9 mi) Walking time: 7-8 hrs Ascent: 900 m (2952′)
Alftavatn Lake - A tranquil highland lake framed by rolling mountains and open skies. Its calm waters reflect the surrounding peaks, making it one of the most serene overnight stops on the trail.
Fjallabak Nature Reserve - A protected wilderness of geothermal valleys, lava fields, rivers, and rhyolite mountains. This remote region is renowned for its untouched beauty and diverse volcanic landscapes.
Alftavatn - Emstrur
Laugavegur - After a hearty breakfast, the journey continues towards the volcanoes via Mælifellssandur! The path passes Stórasúla and Hattafell volcanoes, offering great views of Mýrdalsjökull & Eyjafjallajökull. On the way to Botnar, a beautiful green oasis, the Markarfljótsgljúfur gorge, plunging 200m below, created by glacial water, can be seen. The day concludes with a tasty dinner, enjoying the company of new friends and the beautiful scenery.
Distance: 15km (9.5 mi), walking time: 6-7 hrs, descent: 40 m (130 ft).
Mælifellssandur - A vast black‑sand desert shaped by glacial floods and volcanic eruptions. Its stark, moon‑like terrain creates a powerful contrast with the colorful mountains left behind.
Volcano Eyjafjallajokull - Glacier Views of Eyjafjallajökull & Mýrdalsjökull
Two of Iceland’s most famous glaciers dominate the horizon—Eyjafjallajökull, known for its 2010 eruption, and Mýrdalsjökull, hiding the mighty Katla volcano beneath its ice.
Markarfljótsgljúfur - Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon
A dramatic, steep‑walled canyon carved by the Markarfljót River. Its layered cliffs and winding riverbed create one of the most impressive viewpoints of the entire trek.
Emstrur - Thórsmörk - Reykjavík
Laugavegur - After breakfast, the journey departs from Emstrur towards Þórsmörk. The path goes through Almenningar gorge near Mount Einhyrningur, offering unparalleled views of the glaciers ahead. As Þórsmörk is entered, the landscapes transform into dense birch forests and stunning mountainous scenery. The Laugavegur trail is now complete!
Distance: 15km (9.5 mi), walking time: 6-7 hrs, descent: 300 m (985 ft).
On the return to Reykjavík, a glimpse of Seljalandsfoss is caught. Arrival back in Reykjavík is around 21:30, with drop-off at the BSI bus stop in Reykjavík.
Einhyrningur - Mount Einhyrningur
Named “The Unicorn” for its distinctive horn‑shaped peak, this mountain stands guard at the entrance to Þórsmörk. Its unique silhouette is a favorite among photographers.
Thorsmork - Þórsmörk Valley
A lush, sheltered valley filled with birch forests, braided rivers, and towering glaciers. Protected by surrounding mountains, Þórsmörk feels like a hidden paradise and marks a spectacular end to the Laugavegur Trail.
