Rediscovering Americana: A Day in the Black Hills with Mount Rushmore Tours
Inspired by my love for road trips and Americana, I embarked on the Mount Rushmore Tour in the Black Hills. Join me as I relive a day filled with history, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable moments.
A Cowboy Breakfast to Start the Day
As the sun began to rise over the Black Hills, my husband and I found ourselves at Fort Hays Chuckwagon, ready to embark on a day filled with adventure and nostalgia. The aroma of homemade cowboy pancakes and freshly brewed coffee filled the air, taking me back to the road trips of my youth when my family and I would stop at roadside diners for a hearty breakfast before hitting the open road. The cowboy breakfast was a delightful start, with biscuits and gravy, sausage links, and a hot cup of coffee that warmed my soul and prepared me for the day ahead.
Our guide for the day, Pastor Bill Martin, greeted us with a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye. His engaging personality and wealth of knowledge about the region promised a day of not just sightseeing, but storytelling and connection to the land. As we boarded the bus, I felt a familiar excitement, reminiscent of the road trips I cherished in my younger days.
The Majesty of Mount Rushmore and Beyond
Our first stop was the iconic Mount Rushmore, a place that had long been on my bucket list. As the morning sun illuminated the faces of the four presidents, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and pride. Pastor Bill shared stories of Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who carved this masterpiece, and his vision of the monument facing the morning sun. It was a moment of reflection, connecting the past with the present, and appreciating the artistry and history that define America.
The journey continued along the Iron Mountain Road, a scenic drive that offered breathtaking views and a sense of adventure as we navigated the one-lane tunnels that perfectly framed Mount Rushmore. The nostalgia of the open road, the winding paths, and the camaraderie of fellow travelers made this part of the trip truly special.
Lunch was at the historic Custer State Park Resort, where we indulged in a buffet that was as delicious as it was filling. Though the food was outstanding, I heeded the advice of fellow travelers and opted for a lighter meal, saving room for the evening’s dinner and show. The afternoon took us through the Needles Highway, a 14-mile stretch of awe-inspiring beauty, and a stop at the serene Sylvan Lake, where we took a moment to relax and soak in the natural splendor.
An Evening of Music and Memories
As the day began to wind down, we made our way back to Fort Hays for the Chuckwagon Supper and Live Music Show. The chow line was efficient, and the meal was a comforting blend of baked potatoes, beans, brisket, and spice cake. Despite being full from lunch, the atmosphere and the company made the meal enjoyable, and I couldn’t resist wrapping up some leftovers for the next day’s journey.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Rockin’ Wranglers’ performance. Their lively show, featuring songs from legends like Elvis and Willie Nelson, had us singing along and clapping with joy. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and connection, leaving us with a sense of fulfillment and a renewed appreciation for the road culture that has always been a part of my life.
As we returned to our hotel, I reflected on the day’s experiences, grateful for the opportunity to revisit the open road and the small-town charm that defines the American Midwest. The Mount Rushmore Tour was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was a journey through history, culture, and the timeless beauty of the Black Hills.
