Greetings and welcome!
The Jewish tour of Recife and Olinda offers a unique opportunity for those eager to explore the history of Jews and new Christians in Recife during the 16th and 17th centuries. A knowledgeable historian guide will lead participants through significant landmarks of Jewish heritage in Brazil, shedding light on the colonial economy, the religious culture of the Brazilian people, and the European conflicts that led Portuguese Jews to migrate from the Netherlands in the 17th century. In Olinda, the tour includes visits to prominent churches, markets, and streets from the colonial era, as well as key remnants of the Marrano presence in Brazil during the 16th century, including the house of Branca Dias and a mikveh (purification tank) symbolizing “Marrano” cultural resilience during the colonial period.
In Recife, the tour will explore the historic center, where the majority of the Jewish community resided during the Dutch era of the 17th century, and will include a visit to the first public synagogue in the Americas.
