Exploring the Enchanting Vineyards of Priorat: A Family Adventure

Our family’s love for history and culture led us to the enchanting Priorat wine region in Catalonia. Join us as we explore the vineyards, savor exquisite wines, and uncover the rich history of this captivating area.

A Journey Through the Vineyards of Priorat

Our family has always been drawn to the rich tapestry of history and culture that Europe offers, and the Priorat wine region in Catalonia, Spain, was no exception. Known for its ancient wine traditions, this region promised a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and, of course, exquisite wines. With our children in tow, my wife and I embarked on a private tour with the El Brogit Ecotourism company, led by the delightful and knowledgeable Meritxell.

Our adventure began with a scenic drive from our hotel in Cambrils, winding through the rugged mountains to the Montsant wine region. The landscape was a living canvas, painted with the vibrant colors of the vineyards and the dramatic contours of the mountains. Our first stop was the Baronia de Montsant Bodega in Cornudella de Montsant, where we were greeted by Laura, a charming hostess with a wealth of knowledge about the wines. The children were fascinated by the stories of the Decanter World Wines Awards, and my wife and I savored the superb wines that had earned such accolades.

Exploring the Historical Heart of Priorat

The journey continued to the Carthusian monastery of d’Escaladei, a site that resonated with the echoes of history. This priory, which lent its name to the region, was a captivating glimpse into the past. As a museum curator, I found the setting truly inspiring, and it was a joy to share this piece of history with my family. The children were particularly intrigued by the tales of the monks who once inhabited the monastery, and Meritxell’s engaging storytelling brought the history to life.

A short drive through the vineyards led us to the renowned Cellers Scala Dei, Priorat’s most famous winery. Here, we experienced the depth, intensity, and elegance of the wines that have elevated Priorat to world-class status. The children enjoyed a brief respite in the picturesque village square, where we lunched on typical Catalan cuisine. The flavors of the local food paired perfectly with the wines, creating a memorable culinary experience.

The Scenic Climb to Gratallops

Our final leg of the journey took us to the Consolacio Chapel of Gratallops, a steep climb that rewarded us with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The Ermita vineyard of Alvaro Palacios, known for its prestigious wines, was a highlight of the climb. The children marveled at the famous Licorella slate soil, and we all appreciated the opportunity to learn about the unique terroir that gives Priorat wines their distinctive character.

The day concluded with a visit to the lively Davinssi Bodega in the village of Gratallops. Meritxell’s passion for the Catalunyan countryside, people, and culture was infectious, and her insights added depth to our understanding of the region. As we made our way back to Cambrils, we reflected on the day’s experiences, grateful for the opportunity to explore such a spectacular and fascinating wine region. The Priorat tour was not only an educational journey but also a delightful family adventure, one that we will cherish for years to come.
