Thingvellir National Park - Thingvellir National Park is an essential destination and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the Golden Circle route, the park is set in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates converge, making it one of the few places globally where you can witness two continents drifting apart. It is also the historic site where Iceland’s parliament, Althing, was established in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest functioning parliaments worldwide. The park is accessible after a pleasant one-hour drive.
Visitors to Thingvellir National Park can explore its breathtaking landscape, which features a large lake, waterfalls, and volcanic rock formations. The park offers a variety of activities for tourists, such as hiking, fishing, and diving in the Silfra fissure, where you can swim between two tectonic plates. The Visitor Center at the park provides an interactive exhibition that educates visitors about Iceland’s ancient history and the park’s geological significance. -
Geysir - The Geysir Geothermal Area is a must-visit attraction known for its bubbling hot springs and spouting geysers. After leaving Thingvellir National Park, it is approximately a 45-minute drive. The Strokkur Geysir is the most active geyser in the area, erupting every few minutes and reaching heights of up to 30 meters.
What makes Strokkur Geysir unique is its predictability, as it erupts regularly and consistently. Visitors can anticipate the eruption by observing the pre-eruption bubbling and steam rising from the pool. The geyser’s explosive display is a thrilling sight to witness and capture on camera.
In addition to watching Strokkur Geysir erupt, visitors can explore the geothermal area and observe the various hot springs and steam vents. The surrounding landscape is otherworldly, with colorful mineral deposits and bubbling mud pools.
There are also facilities in the area, including a visitor center and restaurants. -
Gullfoss Waterfall - Known as the Golden Falls, it is a two-tiered waterfall that drops approximately 32 meters into a rugged canyon below. The waterfall is fed by Iceland’s second-largest glacier, the Langjökull, and its water is a stunning turquoise color due to the suspended sediment in the glacial meltwater.
One of the unique features of Gullfoss is that it appears to disappear into the earth as it cascades down the two tiers. This illusion is created by the shape of the canyon and the mist that rises from the waterfall. The sound of the water crashing into the canyon is deafening, and the mist that rises from the falls creates a beautiful rainbow on sunny days. It is a 10-minute drive from the Geysir Geothermal Area.
There are several things to do and see in the surrounding area. For example, visitors can take a hike along the nearby trails that offer stunning views of the waterfall and the surrounding countryside. There is also a visitor center that provides information about the history and geology of the area. - Bruarfoss Waterfall - Often referred to as the “Bridge Falls,” it is one of Iceland’s hidden gems, known for its striking blue waters and unique, intricate cascades. The crystal-clear waters, combined with the dramatic volcanic rock formations, create a picturesque and almost otherworldly sight that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
