Wonderful & informative tour! - Fantastic tour of the lava tube. You wear a helmet with a headlamp, and you can use walking sticks, if needed. You have to walk over a few big lava rocks, but then the rest of the path is on a trail with rails and illumination. Our guide was a geologist who gave a lot of interesting facts about the formation of the tubes, the different types of rocks, and facts about the tunnel itself. He turned off the lights and had us stand silently in complete darkness. Without headlamps or lighting, you cannot see anything around you; and because of the different layers of rock, there is no echo.

Eye opening hike - I was a bit jet lagged after overnight flight and getting bags to hotel for pick up. The tour was fascinating (I majored in geology) and it was my first time exploring volcanoes and cooled lava fields. The hike in and out of the tunnel Was about 4400’ feet -but very wet with piles of snow From last week and water dripping off cave ceiling. The trail was extremely slippery with lots of changes in elevation. I thought I was in decent shape for a 70 year old woman, but my legs were shaking by the time I got back near the entrance of the tunnel. The guide was excellent and very informative. Hotel pick up and drop off were great.

Wonderful tour, but a little challenging - Our guide started the tour instructing us on how to use the headlamp on our helmets and she offered us walking sticks, which I used. When my husband got to the entrance of the tunnel he decided that he wouldn’t be able to participate because the surface was so rocky and uneven. I continued on, but it was rather challenging for me (a senior citizen). The rocks are wet and some are slippery and the path can be a little hard to follow unless you keep right up with the rest of the group. However, our guide made sure we were safe while she pointed out the areas of interest in the tunnel and told us how the tunnel was formed. She even offered to take pictures of me to show my husband; I really appreciated that! I enjoyed the tour and was glad that I was able to get to see this fantastic natural wonder.

Poor response from your operator - Unfortunately, our ship was not allowed to dock because of some port authority issue and we didn’t get off the ship in time to do the tour. We tried numerous times to get ahold of the tour operator but he didn’t respond. When he finally did it was too late to reschedule. Disappointed

Bad experience with Reykjavik Excursions, beware - The tour operator, Reykjavik Excursions, left prior to 8:40am for a 9am tour and consequently we missed the tour even though we were at the meeting place 20 minutes prior to the scheduled excursion departure time. We sent them a message at 8:52am asking where the bus was but they didn’t reply until 9:29am claiming the bus was there until 9am. Not only is the operator not trustworthy, they are accusing without checking all the information. I urge extreme caution in dealing with this operator, very unprofessional.
