The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, occur when particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s upper atmosphere near the North Pole. Lauren and Leo a dual team - Lauren C and Leo were amazing tour guides. Lauren was lively and engaging. She shared information about the northern lights but in an entertaining way which made it fun! Definitely would recommend this excursion.

Highly recommended! - We had a wonderful experience. Our tour guide Lauren C was excellent as was our bus driver Caff (not sure of spelling). They took us to a location with maximum darkness and a gorgeous mountain landscape. They were informative, entertaining and also prepared us for the reality that seeing the lights is hit or miss. Luckily, Mother Nature cooperated and put on quite a display.

Solve is the supreme tour guide - We’re so appreciative of the passion, persistence, and patience that Solvi brought to our Northern Lights tour. He has a remarkable depth of knowledge — historical, scientific, geographic, and even artistic — and he wove all of it into an experience that felt truly special. His instincts told him to keep driving in search of the optimal viewing spot, and he was absolutely right. Thanks to his determination, we ended up with a spectacular show in the sky, complete with oohs and gasps from our entire group. Kudos to Solvi for an unforgettable night. Linda and Don

Best northern lights experience - We had Solvi take us out to see the Northern lights. The tour had been cancelled the previous day and this was our last night and it wasn’t looking great. However his persistence and tenacity ensured we had a memorable tour with hot chocolate and cinnamon cookies to keep us energised on a cold night. Thank you for a 5 star plus experience with photographic memories that are a credit to him!

If you book this tour,... - If you book this tour, make sure that you go to the information desk at the bus station when you arrive and get clear directions about the tour. I was given inaccurate information by other staff at the station and missed the small group tour. The company offered me the large bus tour, which was ok, but I paid for the small group tour. When I requested a refund of the difference, the company refused to do so.

Disappointing Small Group Tour - Be aware of the risks - My Wife and II booked this tour for 21 February 2026. Overall I found this to be a totally disappointing experience. Here are some things you might want to take into account if you are considering booking this tour. The cost of the small group tour is ISK 14,499 (approx. £89) per person. Although it is advertised as a small group tour there could be as many as 25 people on the tour. The cost of the "classic tour" is ISK 8999 (approx. £55) per person and will be on a larger bus. Local pick up is at an extra cost ISK 1799 (approx. £11) and I do not know if this cost is included with the "free tour" as outlined below. If the small group tour goes ahead but no lights are seen, then a "free tour" is available on the "classic tour"which is ISK 5499 (approx. £44) cheaper. If you are not able to go on the free tour before leaving Iceland it remains available for two years if you should return to Iceland. Refunds are only available if the tour is cancelled and you choose not to reschedule you can then apply for a refund. Communication was poor concerning whether the tour was going ahead or not and I did not receive a text or a call as I expected. Fortunately the guides on other tours were able to provide information. Due to being told wrongly that the tour was leaving 30 minutes early, we waited outside for over 50 minutes for the connecting bus. On the three days we were available for the tour it was cancelled on the first night, went ahead on the second night and as no lights were seen, it was then rescheduled for the third night, which was then cancelled. My main issue is that the company decides if the tour goes ahead or not. In my case the skies were overcast and my weather forecast showed cloud all evening, However I was obliged to attend the tour as there was then insufficent time to cancel for a refund. Having spent several hours driving around in the dark it was decided that the tour would be curtailed due to the unfavourable weather conditions with a free tour being made available. However this free tour was then cancelled the following night. Under these circumstances it is clear that the decisions to proceed with the tour or not are made by the company, but with all of the risk being borne by the customer. I did complain to the company, as I did not believe the tour should have proceeded given the weather conditions and requested a refund. I did receive a prompt reply stating no refunds are available and that they had made a decision as follows : "to run the tour made in accordance with our long-established operational procedures, and based on the latest meteorological/aurora data. While the forecast maps show a smaller area of clear sky, this does not directly indicate a low probability of sightings. Our operation team evaluates multiple weather models including cloud movement patterns, and aurora forecasts before confirming a departure. Tours are only operated when there is a reasonable possibility of a sighting." However I do not beleve this was the case for our tour and the driver/guide did not seem confident of getting any sightings and was driving around more in hope than expectation. I really hope that the decision to proceed with the tour was not made solely for commercial reasons. All of the information concerning cancellations etc. is set out on the tour website but if you are unlucky as we were, you could spend ISK 32, 596 (approx. £200) for a couple, just to be driven around in the dark for 3 hours. Accordingly my feeling is that this was an expensive and ultimately a very disappointing experience. If the skies are clear and the northern lights are visible I am sure that observing them away from the light pollution of the city , with a knowledeable and enthusiastic guide on this tour would be wonderful, but just be aware of the risks. We also used the company for the flybus, the golden circle and south coast tours and were completely satisfied with those services, which will be covered by seperate reviews.
