- Borgarnes - On the journey to Snæfellsnes Peninsula, travelers will pass through the charming town of Borgarnes. The drive to this location is truly spectacular, featuring a fjord and numerous scenic mountains. Borgarnes was among the first settlements of Norwegian Vikings upon their arrival in Iceland.
- Ytri Tunga Beach - Ytri-Tunga is a sandy beach with a delightful secret hidden by the sea, behind the farmhouses—a seal colony! Seals enjoy lounging on the rocks of this stunning beach. They are friendly and inquisitive, often climbing onto the rocks for visitors to observe from afar.
- Búðakirkja - Located on the south coast of the peninsula, this village features only a hotel and a small black church known as Búdakirkja, which stands alone amidst a field of lava rocks. Originally built in 1703 and reconstructed in 1987 after a single member’s successful campaign, it boasts a historic graveyard, a bell, and a chalice from its original construction. As a listed building owned by the National Museum of Iceland, it is maintained by the Búdir parish. This picturesque chapel exudes a romantic charm and is a significant attraction.
- Arnarstapi - Arnarstapi: Fishing Village-
The next destination is a quaint fishing village nestled at the base of a mountain, featuring one of the country’s most beautiful harbors.
This small fishing village is known for its stunning coastal cliffs, formed from glowing magma and shaped by the Atlantic’s wild waves. Over thousands of years, erosion has created beautiful stone arches and an impressive marine geyser.
Visitors will explore the coastline while hearing captivating tales about Bárður, the half-man half-troll, and his adventures in the area.
Following this, there will be a stop at the stunning Gatklettur, also known as “Hellnar Arch.”
Gatklettur is a naturally formed stone arch, making it a spectacular spot for photographers and videographers.
- Djupalonssandur Beach - This beach, with its black volcanic sand and stones, was historically where Icelandic fishermen launched their boats to the rich fishing grounds of the Atlantic Ocean. The “lifting stones” used by fishermen to test their strength and prove their worthiness for the demanding life of Atlantic rowboat fishing can still be found here. Visitors are welcome to try lifting them! In 1948, a British fishing trawler was stranded on Djúpalónssandur’s sand reefs. Five men lost their lives, while 14 were rescued by local teams. The ship’s remains are still scattered across the beach, serving as a haunting reminder of nature’s formidable power.
- Londrangar Basalt Cliffs - The Lóndrangar are two rock pinnacles in Iceland, remnants of a larger crater that has mostly eroded. Dominating the southern coastline, Lóndrangar, with its 75-meter high basalt pinnacles, sets the stage for what lies ahead. They are home to various seabirds, including northern fulmars and puffins.
- Kirkjufell Mountain - This iconic narrow mountain has become a symbol of Snæfellsnes in recent years. It gained fame after being featured as the “Arrowhead Mountain” in Game of Thrones. The glaciers’ erosive forces during the last ice age, around 12,000 years ago, shaped this mountain. Its unique appearance makes it one of Iceland’s most photographed attractions.
