- Skogafoss - Skógafoss is arguably the most iconic waterfall along Iceland’s Ring Road, easily accessible from Reykjavik and visible from the highway. The falls leave a powerful and lasting impression upon first sight. Many filming locations in Iceland are visitor-friendly, including the famous Skógafoss Waterfall in South Iceland, featured in the TV series Vikings and the Marvel movie Thor.
- Dyrholaey - This stunning natural rock formation in Southern Iceland is situated between Seljalandsfoss and the quaint town of Vik. Home to various bird species, it offers breathtaking views of the south. The formation itself is not open to pedestrian traffic.
There are two routes to view Dyrholaey: one ascending and one descending. The roads are not fully paved, so SUVs are recommended for most routes in Iceland. The ascending road provides views of the rock formation, birdwatching/nesting areas (check the season if you’re an avid birdwatcher), and the southwest beaches of Iceland’s coast. On a sunny day, the view extends all the way to Skogafoss! The descending road offers a view of the southeast and a different perspective of these rock formations.
The views are truly spectacular, making it an ideal spot for a picnic lunch.
- Volcano Eyjafjallajokull - The Eyjafjallajökull volcano is an ice-cap-covered stratovolcano located north of Skógar and west of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in southern Iceland. It sits on a 2 km wide ice-free pass between Eyjafjallajokull and the nearby Katla volcano, which is topped by the Myrdalsjokull glacier. The eruption was first visually reported around midnight on March 20, 2010, when a red cloud illuminated the sky above the site. The eruption began with fire fountains as a 500 m long fissure vent opened, leading to lava flows and a minor plume of less than 1 km. Two new craters erupted about a week later, showcasing spectacular displays of magma and lava flows.
