- Reykjavik - Embark on an exciting super jeep safari to explore one of Iceland’s most stunning locations: Landmannalaugar!
This geothermal paradise, located in the remote Highlands of Iceland, features a remarkable array of landscapes, including vibrant lava fields, captivating Rhyolite mountains, steaming hot vents, and tranquil crater lakes.
The unforgettable journey begins with a convenient pick-up from your selected location. From there, the adventure heads south, traversing some of Iceland’s most breathtaking scenery to start this super jeep safari.
- Hjalparfoss - Situated in South-Iceland on the edge of the highlands, Hjálparfoss, or Help’s Falls, is a beautiful waterfall in the river Fossá in the Þjórsárdalur valley. The waterfall’s name, “Hjálp,” meaning “help,” reflects its role as a welcoming oasis for travelers crossing the barren Icelandic highlands.
The waterfall splits into two, with a lovely pond in front, surrounded by extraordinary basalt rock formations, creating a picturesque haven. Hjálparfoss flows in the river Fossá just before it joins the glacial river Þjórsá.
The contrast between a freshwater river like Fossá and a glacial river like Þjórsá is significant. Glacial rivers are greyish-white and powerful, filled with sediment from glacial erosion. In contrast, Iceland’s freshwater rivers are known for their beautiful crisp blue hue, perfectly showcased at Hjálparfoss.
- Sigoldufoss - Upon entering the Highlands of Iceland, a stop at Sigöldufoss, a remarkable waterfall on the Tungnaá river, is a must. Standing at an impressive 10 meters high, Sigöldufoss presents a stunning view.
A few decades ago, this waterfall was part of the glacial river Tungnaá, with vast amounts of glacial water rushing downstream, turning it a muddy grey due to sediment. However, the construction of the Sigalda Power Plant redirected the glacial water to power hydroelectric turbines, leaving behind a smaller river of clear spring water.
This change transformed the waterfall’s color from grey to a striking turquoise. While the former waterfall was impressive with its vast volume falling six meters, many believe that Sigöldufoss is even more beautiful today.
- Landmannalaugar - The adventure continues towards the Highlands via mountain roads, crossing rivers and rugged terrain effortlessly in the super jeep. Soon, the journey reaches Landmannalaugar, or the “People’s Pools,” a vast area of stunning and unique beauty in the heart of Iceland’s southern Highlands.
Landmannalaugar is famous for its vibrant, multi-colored rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs. This breathtaking destination offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, bathing in natural hot springs, and exploring lava fields and obsidian caves. Prepare to immerse yourself in one of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes!
Here, there is an opportunity to explore the area on a short hike or, if preferred, to relax in the geothermal waters with a soothing dip in the hot spring.
- Ljotipollur Lake - Ljótipollur, an explosion crater and crater lake in the Icelandic Highlands, reaches depths of approximately 150 meters. Despite its name, which translates to “ugly puddle,” this crater lake is anything but unattractive. Surrounded by vibrant red and green hills, Ljótipollur offers a breathtaking contrast, making it a true photographer’s paradise.
The striking red and green colors are due to iron and sulfur deposits found in the rocks and soil, contributing to the area’s distinctive and unforgettable landscape.
- Volcano Hekla - Hekla is one of Iceland’s most explosive and unpredictable volcanoes. Since Iceland’s settlement, Hekla has erupted between twenty to thirty times and remains active today.
Located along a 40-kilometer (25-mile) rift, the most active segment, Heklugjá, lies directly beneath the volcano itself. Hekla’s summit features numerous craters, with two being particularly prone to eruptions.
Some of Hekla’s eruptions have been so massive that the resulting ash altered the climate of the northern hemisphere for years. Remarkably, about 10 percent of Iceland’s landmass has been shaped by lava flows from Hekla.
During the journey, there will be a stop nearby for a photo opportunity to admire the awe-inspiring view of this mighty volcano.
- Reykjavik - The journey then heads back towards Reykjavík for an evening arrival, where the guide will drop you off at your chosen location.
