- Colossus of Rhodes - The Rise and Fall of the Colossus of Rhodes
This legendary wonder of the ancient world stood as a triumphant symbol of Rhodes’ freedom. Crafted by sculptor Chares of Lindos between 292-280 BC, the 30-meter bronze titan of sun god Helios commemorated the island’s defense against invaders. With one hand holding a bow and the other raising a guiding torch, its mighty legs straddled the harbor entrance as ships passed beneath.
Yet nature had other plans. In 226 BC, just 56 years after its completion, a powerful earthquake shattered this engineering marvel at its knees. The fallen giant broke into massive fragments, its brief but glorious existence ending in ruins. Though gone, the Colossus remains an enduring testament to human ambition and artistry.
