Family Adventures on Santo Antão: A Three-Day Hiking Journey

When I heard about the Santo Antão Hiking Tour, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for a family adventure. With promises of breathtaking landscapes and cultural experiences, I couldn’t resist booking this three-day journey through the heart of Santo Antão.

Day 1: Arrival and the Enchanting Paul Valley

As soon as we arrived at São Vicente Airport, the adventure began. We hopped on a ferry to Santo Antão, and the excitement was palpable. The kids were thrilled to be on a boat, and I was eager to explore the island’s natural beauty. Our guide, Natcha, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of unforgettable experiences.

The drive through the “estrada da velha” was nothing short of breathtaking. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the lush landscapes, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. We arrived in Paul, where we were treated to a delicious lunch. The local cuisine was a hit with the whole family, and Natcha’s explanations of the dishes added a delightful touch.

After lunch, we set off on a hike through the Paul Valley. The kids were fascinated by the terraced crops of sugar cane, banana, and coffee trees. We even visited a traditional sugarmill, where we watched grogue being distilled. The highlight for the kids was trying a shot of the local drink (non-alcoholic for them, of course!). It was a perfect start to our adventure.

Day 2: Discovering Coculi and Cha de Pedras

The second day was all about exploring the hidden gems of Coculi and Cha de Pedras. The hike was tailored to our family’s needs, making it a stress-free experience. Natcha’s knowledge of the local plants and animals kept the kids engaged, and they loved learning about the special herbs and spices grown in the area.

We descended to Cha de Pedras, where the landscape seemed to change with every step. The vibrant colors and unique geography were a feast for the eyes. The kids enjoyed spotting different birds and insects, and I appreciated the opportunity to connect with nature.

Our accommodation near Cruzinha was cozy and welcoming. The kids loved the chance to unwind and share stories from the day’s adventures. It was a day filled with discovery and bonding, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Day 3: Coastal Wonders and the Forgotten Village

Our final day was a journey along the coast, starting from Cruzinha. The volcanic rocks and coastal views were mesmerizing, and the kids were thrilled to spot ospreys soaring above. We passed a stunning black sand beach, where we took a moment to dip our toes in the water.

The hike led us to the ‘forgotten village’ of Formiguinhas, a place that seemed frozen in time. Natcha shared the village’s history, and the kids were captivated by the stories of why it was abandoned. It was a unique experience that sparked their imaginations.

We continued our hike through the villages of Corvo, Formiguinhas, and Aranhas, finally reaching Fontainhas. The view from this fairy-tale village was nothing short of spectacular. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch, soaking in the beauty of the green valley below.

Our journey concluded in Ponta Do Sol, a charming town with colorful streets and ocean landscapes. As we made our way back to Porto Novo, I reflected on the incredible experiences we shared as a family. The Santo Antão Hiking Tour was more than just a hike; it was a journey of discovery, connection, and unforgettable memories. I highly recommend it to any family looking for an adventure that combines nature, culture, and fun!
