- Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum - In 1924, the Latvian Council of Monuments issued an order to establish an open-air museum in Riga. The vision was to relocate a homestead from each of Latvia’s four regions—Courland, Zemgale, Vidzeme, and Latgale—to the museum. Each building would showcase the unique crafts of its respective area. The museum acquired land from a state land fund in the sandy dunes near Jugla Lake, just outside the city.
By 1939, the museum had already erected 40 buildings. Each region had its homestead, along with several other architecturally or culturally significant structures. In the 1930s, the museum gained popularity, with the community actively contributing to its development.
During World War II, the museum remained largely intact, although most of its pre-war staff were unavailable due to repression or exile. Many documents were also lost during this time. After the war, the new Soviet regime misunderstood the museum’s purpose and even deemed it ideologically incorrect. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that the museum experienced a revival, thanks to a new generation of museum specialists.
When Latvia regained independence in 1991, the museum began actively collecting and documenting Latvian heritage from the 1920s and 1930s, a period marked by agrarian reforms that transformed the Latvian countryside. Today, the museum hosts numerous cultural events, including folk concerts and traditional craft festivals, promoting traditional Latvian culture and lifestyle.
- Riga Motormuseum - The Riga Motor Museum is the largest antique vehicle museum in the Baltic countries, situated in Riga, Latvia.
The museum was established in 1989 through an initiative by the Latvia Antique Automobile Club. Since 1992, it has been a member of the International Association of Transport and Communication Museums.
In 2013, the museum closed for renovations and reopened to the public on July 2, 2016.
One of the museum’s most notable exhibits is a replica of the 1938 Auto Union racing car Type C/D. The original car was saved from being scrapped by Viktors Kulbergs, president of the Antique Automobile Club of Latvia, but was later exchanged for a replica from Crostwaite & Gardiner and Roach Manufacturing after negotiations with Audi AG in 1995. The original 1938 car can now be admired at Audi’s museum mobile in Ingolstadt.
