The castle complex is divided into two sections: the older Livonian Order Castle, constructed in the mid-15th century, and the newer residence for the Duke of Courland, built at the end of the 16th century. During the Great Northern War, the Russian military destroyed the Bauska Castle ensemble. Today, the Duke of Courland’s residence is fully restored and houses the Castle Museum, while only the ruins of the Livonian Order’s seat remain.
- Rundale Palace Museum (Rundales Pils) - Located just 15 kilometers from the Lithuania-Latvia border, Rundale Palace was constructed in the 18th century by Ernst Johann von Biron as the Duke of Courland’s summer residence. The palace was designed by Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. Over time, the palace has served various purposes, including as a hospital, elementary school, and grain storage facility. Today, following an extensive and successful renovation, the Rundale Palace Museum and Garden draws numerous tourists and is aptly referred to as the “Versailles of Latvia.”
- Hill Of Crosses (Kryžių Kalnas) - Situated 16 kilometers from Siauliai city, the Hill of Crosses is a unique historical and religious folk art monument. This small hill, adorned with over 200,000 crosses, is the finest repository of Lithuanian cross-making art and symbolizes unwavering faith and resistance against occupation.
