Oudtshoorn to Knysna
The Cango Caves - The Cango Caves are Africa’s largest show caves and one of the Seven Wonders of Southern Africa, making them the archaeological and historical highlight of the Klein Karoo. Located 29km from Oudtshoorn in the picturesque Cango Valley, the caves are set in a limestone ridge parallel to the renowned Swartberg Mountains. Here, visitors will find the finest dripstone caves, with massive halls and towering limestone formations in a variety of colors. Initially thought to be only about 1km long, the caves have been discovered to extend naturally for well over 5km, though they may be even longer and more mysterious than current estimates. Approximately one-quarter of the entire 5km system of interlinking tunnels is open to visitors, with the rest closed for conservation purposes.
Safari Ostrich Farm - A visit to Oudtshoorn wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the only Tractor Safari on an Ostrich Farm in South Africa. This unique adventure allows visitors to interact with a species whose ancestors date back to the age of dinosaurs. It’s a fun and educational experience in the Klein Karoo. Guests can visit the Incubator Room to see chicks hatching inside the incubator and get a close-up view of chicks emerging via a “Spy-Camera” displayed on a big screen TV. Visitors can also watch ostrich eggs being carved, learn about ostrich leather, and explore the different types of ostrich feathers. The farm offers insights into ostrich evolution and their significance to past cultures.
Outeniqua Pass - The Outeniqua Pass, meaning “Laden with honey” in an almost extinct native language, is a stunning example of excellent engineering. It carries traffic from the semi-desert of Oudtshoorn towards the Indian Ocean. The pass features 40 bends, curves, and turns, each over 90 degrees. The highest point of the pass is 800m above sea level, offering breathtaking views of George Town and the Indian Ocean.
