Castel Sant’Angelo has watched over the Tiber for 2,000 years, initially as a symbol of Rome’s imperial power and later as a papal fortress. It served as the burial site for the Antonine emperors up to Caracalla and was originally the mausoleum of the Roman emperor Hadrian.

The fortress is designed in a circular shape surrounded by a square, with each corner of the square featuring a uniquely constructed barbican, or outwork. The central circle houses halls, chapels, residences, gardens, and other facilities. The guide will lead a tour through the castle’s exquisite halls, preserved artworks, and Papal apartments, while sharing the rich history of the castle.
