This is where Charlton Heston made his bones - Today, the Circus Maximus in Rome amounts to little more than a very large field and a few small ruins. Certainly a far cry from what it was in ancient Rome, a chariot racing stadium and entertainment venue recalled by the climactic chariot race in the 1959 epic movie "Ben-Hur" starring Charlton Heston. It once was the largest building for public entertainment in antiquity and one of the largest in history, much larger than the nearby Colosseum. It measured 2,037 feet long and 387 feet wide and accommodated 150,000 people, as many as 300,000 on some occasions. Aside from the more celebrated chariot races, it also hosted wild animal hunts, athletic events, processions and gladiatorial combats. The massive venue was divided down the middle by a 340-meter-long masonry spine with a pillar at each end to mark the turns. Located in the middle of the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills, Circus Maximus was founded in the 6th century BC by Tarquinius Priscus, the fifth king of Rome. Horses raced there for 1,000 years. The last race was recorded in 550 AD. Damaged several times by fire, the Circus Maximus was almost completely rebuilt under Emperor Trajan and most of the structure visible today was built during his reign. The two large Egyptian obelisks that used to be on the site have been moved. Augustus' obelisk of Pharaoh Ramses 11 now stands in Plaza de Popolo and Constantine's obelisk of Thothmes 111 is next to the Basilica of St. John Laternan. Did you know that one charioteer raced for 24 years in the 2nd century AD, won 3,000 times with a two-horse chariot and 1,462 times with a four-horse chariot? When he retired, he had accumulated the fabulous sum of 35 million sesterces or $400 million in today's accounting. Clearly, the Lionel Messi or Le Bron James of his day.

Unique and fun. - Very fun and unique.
The guide was very attentive, patient and treated us very well throughout the game.
It is a very interesting experience and you can see that they create and produce their games with great commitment and affection.

Wow! - I had a fantastic virtual experience at the Circus Maximus! Our guide, Sara, was amazing, friendly, knowledgeable, and made the tour really engaging. The setting was very immersive and atmospheric, bringing the history to life. We moved around to different locations to take part in various scenes, which made it interactive and fun. The kids had a great time and were completely captivated throughout. I definitely recommend this experience for families and history lovers alike!

Must see. - This virtual experience is very well done and allows to understand the architecture and the function of this circus with extraordinary dimensions.

Super VR Experience! - Super experience, fun for adults and daughter (12 years). Gives a good picture of how it was once. VR really gives it an extra dimension. Second daughter (7 years old) still a little too young, but also for her still nice to deliver Circo and climb tower.

Excellent experience - We visited this place which is walking distance from the metro station. We took the virtual experience tour and it was extremely good. We got a full background as to how the races inside the stadium were held. There are different spots where one has to go and listen to the audio while watching the video via virtual reality.
We ended up spending 3 hours here, much more than what we had planned.

There are other things to do in rome (other than this one) - They do provide an eyecover mask, but the vr gadget itself is not sanitized. You will be asked to wear the strap around your neck - which previously was strapped around the neck of the person ahead of you. We visited in summer, so people are sweating all over, so..... [same with the headsets yay!]
The audio was ok, visuals was a disgrace to the true grandeur of Rome. The 3d tech they were using was probably 20 years ago. This made the experience really boring and unworthy of people's time.
I can smell a man's sweat, whenever i put the VR gadget on my face, aggravate that with the poor, dull 3d visuals - every moment of the experience i was wishing that it would end sooner.
The concept was good, but the execution was terrible. Stay away, or don't put your hopes up too much.

Missed! - Bad experience...We went with our family to the reception point (which is not the entrance to Circus Maximus) early...and we waited a long time without seeing any guide or group...
After 30 minutes waiting, we went back into the structure and the Roman municipal employees of the ticket office explained that our tickets were not valid because the virtual tours were only done in the morning...
Obviously, other French families had the same pitfall... We're spread thin...
So, big disappointment at wasting time and money for nothing...
