- Colosseum - The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, remains the largest amphitheater in the world. It was commissioned by Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian, who selected the site between the Palatine, Esquiline, and Celian hills, previously occupied by Nero’s Domus Aurea artificial lake. Construction began in 70 AD and concluded in 80 AD under Emperor Titus, Vespasian’s son. The structure, designed for gladiatorial contests (munera), wild and exotic animal hunts (venationes), and naval battles (naumachiae), features four architectural tiers. The first three consist of eighty arches framed by semi-columns, while the fourth is divided into panels with windows. In the uppermost tier, masonry and wooden supports were used to hold a massive awning (velarium) that protected spectators from the sun and rain.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Incredible Ancient Rome & Colosseum Experience! - We had an amazing time on the Skip-the-Line Private Tour of Ancient Rome and the Colosseum! From start to finish, this was one of the highlights of our trip to Rome well worth every moment and truly unforgettable.
Booking this private tour meant we skipped the long ticket lines and went straight in with our guide, which made the experience so much smoother and more enjoyable compared to going on our own. Once inside, our guide’s passion, deep knowledge of Roman history, and engaging storytelling brought the ruins to life in a way that absolutely exceeded our expectations.
The tour took us through the iconic Colosseum where we learned about gladiators, emperors, and ancient spectacles and then on to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, each stop filled with fascinating history and breathtaking views.
We especially appreciated:

Poor Performance from Welcome Italy - We had an extremely disappointing experience with Welcome Italy on the Ancient Rome and Colosseum Half Day Private Tour with the added Vatican and Sistine Chapel visit. From the start, the experience was disorganized and poorly communicated. There was no clear confirmation of ticketing or expectations, and despite reaching out multiple times, we did not receive basic meeting details until the evening before the tour, which is unacceptable customer service.
The first portion of the tour at the Colosseum was fine. Our guide was knowledgeable and shared decent information. While it was pouring rain, that was not the issue and actually helped with crowd size.
The major problems began between tours. We were told lunch was included, only to be dropped at a tourist trap restaurant where nothing was included and we had to pay the full bill. This was never explained clearly in advance. Had we known, we would have chosen a different restaurant nearby that was far better.
The transition to the Vatican tour was chaotic and frustrating. Our first guide told us the second guide would meet us around 2, yet no one arrived until 3:30. On top of that, the tour was marketed as fast pass entry to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, which was simply not true. We were given standard general admission tickets and forced to wait in a very long line, which felt misleading at best.
While the Vatican guide himself was fine, there was very little communication around timing or expectations. Because of the long delays and slow pacing, the tour ran far longer than anticipated and eliminated any chance of additional sightseeing afterward since it was already dark.
Overall, this experience felt like false advertising combined with extremely poor coordination and communication. Expectations were completely mismanaged, and for the price and reputation of this company, the quality delivered was very disappointing. I would not recommend booking with this tour company.
