- Pantheon - Located in the center of Rome, the Pantheon stands as one of the ancient world’s most remarkable architectural achievements. Its rich history spans over two millennia, from its initial creation during the Roman Empire, through its significance in the Christianization of Rome, to its current status as a national and architectural symbol.
The original Pantheon was built by Marcus Agrippa, a close associate of Emperor Augustus and a distinguished general. Constructed around 27 BCE, Agrippa’s Pantheon was part of a larger initiative to redevelop the Campus Martius area of Rome. This initial Pantheon was a typical rectangular Roman temple, likely dedicated to all gods (hence the name “Pantheon”), and aimed to honor both Augustus and the Roman deities believed to safeguard the empire.
