Embark on a journey through three of the most significant Basilicas globally, next to St. Peter’s: St. John Lateran, St.Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. Constructed in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine, St. John Lateran Basilica holds the title of the oldest church in the West. Previously a papal seat and currently serving as the Archdiocese of Rome’s hub, it is Rome’s Cathedral. Within its walls, it treasures the original doors of the Roman Curia, the senate house. In its vicinity lay the Scala Sancta ( Holy Stairs ), believed to have been the exact stairs on which Christ was trialed before Pontius Pilate. St. Mary Major, one of the earliest churches dedicated to Mary, Jesus’s mother, is admired for its mosaics illustrating Mary’s life. The church also safeguards the relic of Christ’s crib. Last, but certainly not least, stands the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the second-largest Basilica trailing St. Peter’s Basilica. This landmark was established on St. Paul’s burial site.
