This collection of paintings, sculptures, and antiquities was started by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who was both the nephew of Pope Paul V and an enthusiastic collector of Caravaggio’s works. Some of Caravaggio’s notable pieces in this collection include the Boy with Basket of Fruit, Saint Jerome Writing, and Sick Bacchus to name a few.
The extraordinary creations of Gian Lorenzo Bernini also form a significant portion of this collection, with secular sculpture like the Goat Amalthea with Child Jupiter and Faun, Aeneas, Anchises and Ascanius and the dynamic pieces such as Rape of Proserpine, Apollo and Daphne, and David (1623) which are seen as pioneering works of Baroque sculpture. The Galleria Borghese also features numerous portrait busts, including one of Pope Paul V and two of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, one of his initial benefactors.
