Florence
Duomo - Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore - Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. One of the most famous sites is the Duomo, the cathedral with a tiled dome designed by Brunelleschi and Giotto’s bell tower. Florence, with its museums, palaces, and churches, houses some of the world’s most important artistic treasures. The most notable churches include Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce.
When you need a break from museums and art galleries, take a stroll through the beautiful streets of the historic center of Florence.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is a grand Gothic-style church built on the site of Florence’s ancient cathedral, the Church of Santa Reparata. The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century by Arnolfo di Cambio, with the magnificent dome added in the 15th century. The facade is adorned with pink, white, and green marbles.
Piazza della Signoria - Piazza della Signoria has been the heart of Florence’s political life since the 14th century. The Piazza has witnessed significant historical events and triumphs, such as the return of the Medici in 1530. The famous sculptures in Piazza della Signoria reference Florence’s political affairs, with some contrasts. Michelangelo’s David (the original is in the Accademia Gallery) was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio to symbolize the power of the Florentine Republic in contrast to Medici tyranny. Ammannati’s Neptune (1575) reflects the Medici’s maritime ambitions.
Basilica of Santa Croce - Santa Croce, rebuilt for the Franciscan order in 1294 by Arnolfo di Cambio, is the resting place of Florence’s great and powerful: Michelangelo, Rossini, Machiavelli, and the Pisan Galileo Galilei, who was condemned by the Inquisition and thus could not have a Christian burial until 1737, 95 years after his death. There is also a memorial to Dante, but his sarcophagus is empty (he was buried in Ravenna after his exile from Florence).
Florence - Bologna - Venice
Piazza Maggiore - Piazza del Nettuno
Founded in 1565 to highlight the statue of Neptune, from which it takes its name, the square resulted from a project that expanded the space between the Palazzo del Comune and the Palazzo del Podestà by demolishing a block of buildings. The new square gave a new character to the surrounding area, connecting with Piazza Maggiore. The heart of the city, Piazza Maggiore, is the result of centuries of transformations that gradually enriched it with important buildings: the Basilica of San Petronio, the Palazzo dei Notai, the Palazzo d’Accursio, the Palazzo del Podestà, and the Palazzo dei Banchi.
Basilica di San Petronio - The Basilica of San Petronio is Bologna’s main church: it dominates Piazza Maggiore and, although largely unfinished, is one of the largest churches in Europe. Its impressive size makes it the fourth largest church in Italy.
Venice
Piazza San Marco - Elegant, precious, inimitable, fun, romantic: this is Venice, a jewel of the Venetian and Italian tourist scene, where churches, palaces, ancient bridges, monuments, and squares reflect the artistic and cultural vibrancy that has marked and continues to mark the city’s history. The heart of Venice is the splendid Piazza San Marco, the most elegant living room in Europe, surrounded by works of undeniable value: the imposing bell tower and the Basilica with its five portals and marble and mosaic decorations that hint at the interior’s magnificence and riches; the Palazzo Ducale, symbol of the Serenissima’s golden age; the Torre dei Mori, better known as the Clock Tower, an engineering masterpiece that has marked Venice’s time for centuries; the Napoleonic Wing, home to the Correr Museum.
After this, enjoy a spritz or prosecco to crown your visit to Venice’s highlights with your tour leader.
Ponte dei Sospiri - The Bridge of Sighs’ legend suggests that during the Serenissima, prisoners sighed as they crossed it, knowing it would be the last time they saw the outside world before imprisonment.
Venice - Montepulciano (Wine region) - Rome
Piazza Grande a Montepulciano - Montepulciano, renowned for the wine that bears its name, stands on a hill 600 meters above sea level: from this height, one can easily lose themselves in the view of the green Tuscan hills, olive groves, vineyards, and cypress trees that pleasantly define the landscape. From the Tower of the Renaissance Palace of Montepulciano, the view extends to the Sibillini Mountains and the Cimone.
