Palazzo Altemps showcases an extensive array of Greek and Roman artifacts that once belonged to various noble families of the city and is one of the four sites linked to the National Roman Museum. Visitors can meet a highly-rated guide, who is a specialized archaeologist, at the entrance to discover how the palazzo was inaugurated as a museum in 1997, with the purpose of displaying archaeological finds. Over time, it has acquired sculptures, marble statues, and mosaics. As you explore the magnificent building, take note of the breathtaking frescoes that embellish the walls and ceilings.
Many artifacts are part of the Ludovisi Collection. Highlights include the exquisite Ludovisi Throne, a carved marble block featuring a nude Venus, Bernini’s remarkable restoration of the Ares Ludovisi, and the Gaul’s Suicide. The museum also boasts a significant collection of Egyptian art and sculptures, some of which originated from Egypt. The building includes a charming courtyard with a beautiful loggia and its own chapel, Sant’Aniceto.
