- Rome - With a history spanning 28 centuries, Rome is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Although Roman mythology suggests its founding around 753 BC, the area has been settled for much longer. The city’s early inhabitants were a blend of Latins, Etruscans, and Sabines. Over time, Rome evolved into the capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire, earning recognition as the first Imperial City and metropolis. The Roman poet Tibullus first referred to it as The Eternal City in the 1st century BC, a term later embraced by Ovid, Virgil, and Livy. Rome is also known as “Caput Mundi” (Capital of the World). Following the Empire’s decline in the west, marking the start of the Middle Ages, Rome gradually came under Papal control, becoming the capital of the Papal States in the 8th century, lasting until 1870. From the Renaissance onward, nearly all popes from Nicholas V (1447–1455) implemented a unified architectural and urban plan over four centuries, establishing the city as a global artistic and cultural hub. Consequently, Rome emerged as a key Renaissance center and the birthplace of Baroque and Neoclassicism. Renowned artists, painters, sculptors, and architects flocked to Rome, creating masterpieces throughout the city. In 1871, Rome was designated the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, which transitioned to the Italian Republic in 1946.
