- Colosseum - The Colosseum stands as a prominent emblem of Rome. This grand structure, with nearly 2,000 years of history, transports visitors back in time to explore life during the Roman Empire. Under the Roman Empire’s “Bread and Circuses” motto, the Roman Colosseum (then known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) hosted over 50,000 spectators for its spectacular events. These included exotic animal displays, prisoner executions, battle reenactments, and gladiator contests, providing entertainment for the Roman populace for many years.
- Circus Maximus - Nestled between the Aventine and Palatine Hills, the Circus Maximus was the largest stadium in ancient Rome, designed for chariot racing.
- Bocca della Verita - Located in the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin Church, the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità) is a globally renowned large marble mask, reputed to bite the hands of liars. Originally situated in the Piazza della Bocca della Verità until 1632, it was later moved to the exterior of a wall at the nearby Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where it remains today.
- Piazza Venezia - Piazza Venezia is a vast square in the heart of Rome, where several major avenues converge, including Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via del Corso. The square’s name comes from Palazzo Venezia, a building once used as the Venetian embassy in Rome. Over the years, the square has undergone numerous transformations due to the construction and demolition of various buildings between the 19th and 20th centuries. A key feature of the square is the grand “Vittoriano” monument, dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s first king, located between the square and the Capitoline Hill. With its striking white appearance, the “Vittoriano” dominates Piazza Venezia and is crafted from white travertine. The monument is also known as “Altare della Patria” because it houses the altar of the unknown soldier. In keeping with Christmas tradition, a spruce tree is placed in Piazza Venezia each year as a festive decoration.
- Trevi Fountain - Trevi Fountain is considered the most stunning fountain in Rome. Measuring approximately 20 meters wide by 26 meters high, it is also the city’s largest fountain. The fountain’s origins date back to 19 B.C., when it marked the endpoint of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. The initial fountain was constructed during the Renaissance under Pope Nicholas V’s guidance. The Trevi Fountain’s final design was completed in 1762, after years of work by Nicola Salvi and later finished by Giuseppe Pannini. Interestingly, the name Trevi comes from Tre Vie (three ways), as the fountain was the junction of three streets.
- Pantheon - The Pantheon is one of Rome’s most exquisite and captivating structures, and it remains a marvel of engineering today. Its circular design and harmonious architecture continue to impress thousands of visitors daily, nearly 2,000 years after its creation. Originally built by Agrippa between 27 and 25 BC, it was dedicated to all the Olympian gods. The term “Pantheon” is derived from Greek, meaning “of all Gods” (“pan” = “all” and “theon” = “divine”). However, Agrippa’s original building was damaged by fires in 80 A.D. and 120 A.D., and was completely reconstructed by Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125 A.D., remaining largely intact to this day.
- Spanish Steps - The Spanish Steps, or Piazza di Spagna, are among the world’s most iconic images and one of the grandest urban monuments of Roman Baroque style. In the late 17th century, it was known as Trinità dei Monti, after the church that overlooks the square, but it was later renamed after the Spanish Ambassador who resided there.
- Vatican City - Vatican City, located in the center of Rome, is Europe’s smallest state in terms of both population and area. Vatican City (Città del Vaticano in Italian) is an independent city-state situated in the heart of Rome, governed by the Pope (Bishop of Rome). It serves as the central authority of the Roman Catholic Church.
