Initially serving as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, the structure was later utilized by popes as a fortress and castle, and today it functions as a museum.
- Piazza del Popolo - Piazza del Popolo is a significant urban square in Rome. While its name translates to “People’s Square” in modern Italian, it historically originates from the poplars (populus in Latin, pioppo in Italian) that inspired the name of the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, located in the piazza’s northeast corner.
- Piazza Navona - Piazza Navona is a renowned square in Rome, Italy. It is constructed on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, dating back to the 1st century AD, and retains the shape of the stadium’s open space. Ancient Romans visited to watch the agones (“games”), leading to its initial name “Circus Agonalis” (“competition arena”). Over time, the name evolved from in avone to navone and finally to navona.
- Ponte Sisto - Ponte Sisto is a bridge located in Rome’s historic center, crossing the Tiber River. It links Via dei Pettinari in the Rione of Regola to Piazza Trilussa in Trastevere. The current bridge was constructed between 1473 and 1479, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV (r. 1471-84), and designed by architect Baccio Pontelli, who utilized the foundations of a previous Roman bridge, the Pons Aurelius, which had been destroyed in the early Middle Ages. Presently, the bridge is restricted to pedestrian traffic.
