As Dominica’s largest lake, it is located in the village of Laudat, over 2,500 feet above sea level. Freshwater Lake is a primary source for Titou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls, and the Roseau River. Nestled in the crater of an ancient volcano at the base of Morne Macaque, the lake is encircled by a trail offering breathtaking views of Grand Fond and Rosalie. This lake boasts a unique mountain ecosystem and remarkable natural beauty, surrounded by montane forest, which features short trees and an open canopy at high elevations. Visitors can enjoy a cooler climate, often described as chilly, particularly at night.
The loop trail around Freshwater Lake takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete, providing an easy to moderate walking experience. This trail is optional.
