Into the Heart of Dominica’s Wilderness

As the sun rose over the emerald island of Dominica, I found myself standing at the edge of Freshwater Lake, the largest of its kind on the island. The air was crisp, a refreshing change from the humid embrace of the Amazon, and the lake’s surface mirrored the sky’s early hues. Our guide, Channon from Next Level Hikers, greeted us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for her homeland. Her knowledge of the island’s ecology was impressive, and as a fellow biologist, I found her insights into the montane forest surrounding the lake particularly fascinating. The trail around Freshwater Lake offered panoramic views that were nothing short of breathtaking, each step revealing a new facet of this unique mountain ecosystem.

The Enchanting Ti Tou Gorge

Our next stop was the mystical Ti Tou Gorge, a place that seemed to belong to another world. Our final destination was the tranquil Ti Kwen Glo Cho hot springs, a perfect conclusion to a day of exploration. The sulphur-rich pools, nestled amidst tropical greenery, offered a soothing embrace, their warmth a stark contrast to the chill of the gorge. As I soaked in the mineral-rich waters, I reflected on the day’s adventures and the importance of preserving such pristine environments.
