Into the Heart of Lapland

The Arctic has always been a place of extremes, a land where the raw beauty of nature is both awe-inspiring and unforgiving. As a former Arctic researcher, I’ve spent countless nights under the polar skies, but the allure of the Northern Lights never fades. This time, my journey took me to Rovaniemi, where I joined a small group tour to hunt the Aurora Borealis. The promise of an intimate experience, away from the throngs of tourists, was too enticing to resist.

Our guide, Atanas, was a master of his craft. His deep understanding of the region and the Northern Lights phenomenon was evident from the start. He navigated the wilderness with a calm assurance, constantly adapting to the ever-changing weather conditions. It was clear that this was not just a job for him, but a passion. As we ventured deeper into the Lapland wilderness, the temperature plummeted to a bone-chilling –30°C. Yet, Atanas’s warmth and attentiveness made the harsh environment feel almost welcoming.
